Winter to Spring

Ahh, the transition from winter to spring in Minnesota.

We were not quite ready to give up the last of one of the coldest, snowiest winters in Minneosta history so we took the Pluntzes up to Gunflint where they were enjoying an extended winter season at the end of March.

Fun was had by all, with hearing howling wolves at night, to snowshoeing up a large hill, to mushing, to XC skiing. Well, about the skiing, Richard had a unfortunate MCL tear on a run our first day at Gunflint. But, he was quite a trooper and was out two days later to help the Pluntzlings learn to ski, with two butter knives between two knee braces to serve as the missing ligament.

Then onto April, the cruelest month. There's no snow left, but it's hard to bike, too wet to hike, and the birds haven't quite made it back yet. What are the Spolts to do? Time for a mindless, knee-hab vacation to Cancun.

Yes, we did some queso-y things like the above, but got to swim, body surf, walk the beach, soak up the sun, eat great fruits and seafood, and have one of our favourite Mexican treats: cacahuates japoneses. We also found a hidden gem of restaurant on our less populated end of the beach called Navios.

And, in true Spolt style, we found the one birdy place in Cancun -- the El Rey ruins. Before it was over we added three new birds to our blog by just doing our favourite thing -- walking around.

Now we're ready for Spring!
